Most tunes came up centuries ago but some tracks are actually brand new, exclusively written for this collection.

Background notesThis text was written by the famous writer of sacred hymns Paul Gerhardt (1607 - 1676). He studied Theology in Wittenberg, the city in which Martin Luther declared his famous 95 theses that led to the split of the Roman Church. Paul Gerhardt was a Protestant and admired Luther a lot. This particular song was written during the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) and was supposed to bring back joy and delight to the people suffering from war. It should last more than a century until the tune was put into music by the composer August Harder (1775 – 1813). Ever since it is one of the most popular sacred hymns of the Protestants in Germany. |
